Scoliosis Screening Technical Training in Yinchuan, Ningxia
On June 11-12, the National Health Commission for Disease Prevention and Control held the 2019 National Student Common Disease and Health Influencing Factors Detection and Intervention Project Technical Training in Yinchuan, Ningxia.
At the meeting, officers from the CDC of National Health and centers for Disease Control and Prevention attended the conference to summarized 2018 national students' common diseases with influencing factors, and myopia detection work, they also interpreted the common disease and its impacts to children in 2019. In addition, the conference provided training for onsite detection technology questionnaires, indicators, myopia, and other common disease found in students at the preparatory work.
Professor Yang was invited as a guest speaker. According to the “Abnormal Testing in Scoliosis” he proceeded into training sessions.
Yang emphasized that scoliosis was a common disabling disease. Chances of developing such disease ranged from 2-3%. He further pointed out that the disease was commonly found at the age of 10-18. The ratio between men and women being diagnosed with scoliosis was 1:4. Since scoliosis was developed during children's development stages, the disease often went undetected as it showed no pain symptoms. He pointed out that if the disease was diagnosed early, patients could avoid surgical treatments.
As youth health cooperation center, Peking University Institute of Child and Adolescent Health, Guangdong X-in Miao Scoliosis Prevention Center has completed a total of more than 1.3 million scoliosis screening tests on middle school students in 1000 schools in the past 6 years. Results of screening tests showed if diagnosed and treated early, vast majority of students patients with moderate to mild scoliosis can control the disease by conservative treatment of medical training, bracing or rehabilitation, which effectively prevents these patients from undergoing surgeries and they can achieve similar spinal functions as normal people.
Self-diagnosing method in scoliosis is the latest update in the system. This method is an important part of abnormal detection of spinal curvature. It is simple, convenient, and accurate. Once again this method has been recognized by the majority for its extensive learning.
At this training conference, Yang emphasized that "scoliosis is not the ultimate goal, prevention is the goal". He introduced a new system of accurate screening diagnosis and treatment system (XTS) for scoliosis.
XTS targets every patients' scoliosis and provides them with a personalized treatment and control patients' scoliosis progress. On top of its basis, XTS also targets correcting scoliosis and minimizes the damages.
Yang has always been committed to improving adolescences' scoliosis. On the eve of June 1st, the Orthopedic Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association established the Pediatric Spine Group and Yang served as the group leader. He hopes that through structured training, scoliosis will be prevented at an early age. He also encourages the use of artificial intelligence (AI) screening and established a professional educational platform to raise awareness for scoliosis and related spinal diseases.
Professor Yang Junlin also expressed the hope that more government agencies, social charities and medical institutions will participate in the spine health work of children and escort the spine health of children and adolescents nationwide.
