Bracing Treatment

Bracing treatment is one of the conservative treatments for idiopathic scoliosis adolescent patients. There are many types of braces to treat AIS. The main purpose of using bracing is to apply external forces on the sides of the spine to correct scoliosis. At the start of treatment, patients are required to wear the brace for more than 18-20 hours (apart from medical training). By wearing the brace, the cobb degree will decrease 30%-50% and achieve visible results. As the scoliosis degree decreases, patients can switch into wearing braces at night. It is important to emphasize that medical training should be performed along with bracing treatment to prevent spinal stiffness and muscle atrophy, which helps strengthen the muscles of the torso to fight scoliosis. The bracing treatment varies from person to person because it must be adjusted according to correction progress. Braces must be made by certified hospitals because of patient variation. Hence, the braces must be made with minimal to zero errors to prevent scoliosis due to growth. As wearing braces will affect the way adolescents present themselves and cause discomfort, some children choose not to wear braces. Such action will worsen the development of scoliosis. Therefore, patients (especially adolescents) must adhere to our physician's treatment plans.
